10 Reasons to Hire an Independent Educational Consultant

After watching the CNN special on the college admissions scandal on Sunday, I felt the need to dispel some myths about IEC’s (Independent Educational Consultants) and to enlighten the public on what it is that we actually do.

  1. We don’t charge 1 million dollars! I feel like this was added to the documentary for shock and effect. There are people who up-charge for any service in any domain, so yes there might be that one exception just like there are photographers and hair stylists who charge staggering amounts. But honestly, I don’t know any IEC’s who charge this and most charge affordable rates and are often flexible, offering different options and payment plans. I just wanted to make it clear that we provide services to regular people.

  2. We have the expertise and the research to help guide you through the process.

  3. You will save countless hours of research.

  4. We play the role of mediator between student and family to reduce conflict.

  5. You will be spending the next four years of your life and thousands of dollars on your education. For this sort of major decision, it’s wise to get an expert opinion.

  6. The average school counselor to student ratio is 482 to 1. Can you realistically expect to get personalized guidance with those numbers?

  7. Most of us will not guarantee admissions to highly selective schools. On the contrary, we seek to help you find schools that are a great fit both academically and socially, whether it’s a “name” school or a school you’ve never heard of.

  8. We are an extra eye for revision and a helpful guide for writing essays. I’ve seen students make the silliest mistakes on their applications which does not look good to admissions officers.

  9. We help alleviate some of the stress of the senior year. The fall semester of senior year is hectic for most students as they try to bring their grades up one last time, prepare for SAT and ACT tests, participate in extracurriculars, research colleges, and complete applications. I don’t know how you get it all done without help.

  10. Many of us do belong to professional organizations that set guidelines and expectations for our roles. I am a member of the IECA (Independent Educational Consultant Association) which not only sets guidelines but also keeps me up to date with the latest information and trends in college admissions.

I hope I’ve helped to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about our job and that I’ve shown you how our services can help. The best way to find out more is to give us a call….
